CLIENT BRIEF
With other properties around the world, Loft Bures was to be the Client’s main home. He wanted an apartment for a single man, with a focus on a big living space to bring friends and family together.
The master bedroom and bathroom were structured to offer privacy, with a guest room to be included in the design. The interior was to be masculine and designed to be livable, inviting, cultured, authentic and intimate.

"I fell in love with this building when I first set foot in it. A project in an iconic modernistic building like Casa Bures is like a dream coming true for every interior architect. It felt crucial to me to honor the historic character, and to develop designs which respect the spirit of the space."

THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF LOFT BURES HAS WON FOUR AWARDS
Casa Burés is situated in the Eixample neigbourhood of Barcelona and was built in 1905 by textile magnate Francesc Bures who hired the architect Berenguer to design his family residence and business headquarters.
The building is one of the best examples of Catalan Modernista architecture
Berenguer, a partner of Antoni Gaudí collaborated in Casa Burés with the most renowned artisans of the time to create a Modernist masterpiece interior.
In 2014 a property development company bought the building to develop high-end residential units of apartments, lofts & penthouses.

HISTORY OF CASA BURÉS
The loft is located on the ground floor which used to be part of the warehouse of the family business and also operating as the ´stable´ for the horses and horse carriages which were entering from the street through huge wooden doors.
The challenge was to repurpose the historic space to a contemporary use as an habitable sophisticated home. As Gaudí himself said, the curved line is the line of God.
The entrance of Casa Burés represents all these classic Modernist features which are wavy and sinuous lines in a sculpture carved stone staircase, a majestic mosaic glass windows (vitralls) and wrought iron elements. The Loft's entrance is the original four meter high wooden doors.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND FEATURES
To give credit to the history of the building, it was important to us to design almost all pieces of furniture custom. They were tailored to the place & person, not only in size but in context, legacy and aesthetics.
“For me, it is very important to use materials of the highest quality which are long-lasting and age with grace, both because of their sustainability and because they enable you to provide the design with tactile materials that have a character all of their own.”
Kirsten Schwalgien
The cabinets of the fully custom designed kitchen, were veneered in smoked chestnut and treated to keep the tactile quality of the wood to a maximum. The veneer was not only hand-selected, but also specifically arranged to emphasize the grain patterns of the wood. The working tops and island top were made of a vibrant dark green Indian marble to provide warm tactility.
The dining table is a focal point, to share homemade food and bring family and friends together. It is a bespoke design displaying a raw untreated vintage brass top.
The table legs combine the four primary materials used in the loft joined in one piece of furniture.

SYD separated the master bedroom from the living area with a box Schwalgien separated the master bedroom from the living area, with a box construction which accommodates the walk-in closet & guest WC.Above the box, the air–conditioning units are centrally located and completely hidden from view.
The wooden box walls were fully veneered in grey-silvery tulipie wood with a mirrored ceiling, and acts as a visual transition to the private rooms of the owner.
Hidden sliding doors give extra privacy when required. A home automation system receives information from several sensors, in order to adapt light, color and brightness according to the time of day.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND FEATURES

MATERIALS
For the key materials, Schwalgien chose to combine open pore varnished veneer, with the original brick walls remaining exposed in some areas. The floors combine industrial concrete floors with exquisite grey-stained mosaic parquet.
The sensorial qualities were another focus point, alternating textures of cold with warm, glossy with raw and soft with hard. The finishes of all materials were meticulously orchestrated and layered to ensure rich tactility and timelessness.
